History

Ordered by S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury to investigate an event in the New Mexico desert, Agent Phil Coulson found an immovable hammer-shaped object that fell from the sky, unaware Asgardian king Odin had stripped his son Thor of his hammer Mjolnir and banished both to Earth for Thor's disobedience and arrogance. After clearing the area of bystanders, Coulson set up a quarantine around it, then oversaw the confiscating of the quipment and research of Dr. Jane Foster, who was investigating atmospheric disturbances, deeming her data key to understanding the mysterious object. Seeking his hamemr, Thor broke into the secured S.H.I.E.L.D. faciity. Coulson directed defensive measures against the intruder, oredering agent Clint Barton into a crane bucket to get eyes up high. Coulson observed as Thor tried and failed to lift Mjolnir.

During a subsequent interrogation, Coulson unsuccessfully attempted to learn Thor's true identiy. Thor's new acquaintance Erik Selvig came to Thor's rescue, telling Coulson that Thor was Dr. Donald Blake, a colleague distraught that S.H.I.E.L.D. had confiscated all of their reearch. Knowing that Selvig was lying, Coulson allowed the two to leave, but had them followed.

After S.H.I.E.L.D. systems monitored a massive energy spike, Coulson scrambled his men to check out the source of the disturbance. Upon arrival, Coulson found the Asgardian Destroyer construct, sent by Thor's brother Loki to destroy Thor. After the Destroyer attacked the grossly overwhelmed S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Thor sacrificed his life battilng the Destroyer, which proved him worthy of his hammer and stature. After being resurrected and defeating the Destroyer, Thor made a deal with Coulson: Thor would be his ally if S.H.I.E.L.D. returned all data and equipment to Foster, whom Thor had fallen in love with; Coulson agreed, offering S.H.I.E.L.D.'s help in continuing her astrophysics research.
